‘Neat’ TV Show Airs

‘Neat’, the award winning show I hosted on HGTV Canada, is now airing in the States on ION. It’s exciting to see renewed interest in the show and the unique approach it takes towards organizing homes, offices and (especially) lives. I’m so proud of the work we’ve done on the show, and thrilled that it is attracting and helping a whole new audience.

I’ve been getting a lot of fan mail with questions and comments about the show, so I thought I would share a few of them. If you’d like to see some of my responses, go to my Facebook Page (Recent Posts By Others). While you’re there, it would be great if you would ‘like it’ too!

Please keep them coming. I love hearing from you and I’ll make every effort to answer your questions personally…although sometimes it may take a while.

Love your show on ION, BUT… Only objection is you told one of your clients to store her art pens upright to see them better, but you should always store art pens and markers HORIZONTALLY, to keep them from drying out!!

Kim

I enjoy Neat for the kind, gentle way you help people get a new way to live. You already have made an impact on me and i just started watching 3 weeks ago. I finally have hope for the first time in years. Thank you so much for your diligence and great use of your time and talents.

Donna

I’ve just started watching your show on ION life. It’s been a great motivator and I’ve been getting rid of the clutter in my apartment! So thanks!

Regina

I really enjoy your show, Hellen. I love watching the mental transformation as well as the physical.

Belinda

I want to thank you, Hellen, for being my inspiration in getting organized. After about a year and a half (or maybe more!), I’ve finally cleared out my office “area” (it’s not a room) that was stuffed with items from my parents and my childhood. As I was going through items, I kept thinking – does this bring me happiness? do I love it? does it fit in my life now? A few items I kept or passed on to other family members, but most was tossed. Things I didn’t keep but wanted to remember, I took a picture of. It’s so nice to be in that space now as I have room for my scrapbook table and supplies. And I have this great sense of accomplishment and relief of not having to keep looking at piles of stuff! Also, the guilt of keeping stuff “because it was mom’s and dad’s” is gone; I think they’d be pleased. Thanks again! (The garage is next!)

Astra

Does anyone have any tips for organizing loose recipes?

Sarah

Where does one go if they want to become a certified professional organizer in Ontario? Is it possible to learn online or is it better to learn hands on?

Marianne

Are you a new viewer of the show? If so, what’s your favorite episode? Please comment below.

P.S. You can watch short clips of  ‘neat’ on my media page.

Hello Hellen. Once again… thank you for the monthly newsletter… I always look forward to the next one all month.
I may have some ideas for Sarah – loose recipes. Staple or glue your recipes to a page and then slide them in a three whole plastic protection sheet (otherwisethe weight makes it harder to turn when just on paper and the plastic keeps them protected) and store them in a binder. You can add many recipes of the same type all on one page or just a couple per page so that you can add notes when you get a chance to try the recipe. If your recipes are double sided… you could get the pastic protection sheets that open and then scotch tape the recipes on the inside so that you can see them clearly. Or get them photocopied and then use the first idea. I rewrite the ones I use often on my computer and print a copy for my binder. Then it’s easy to print one for anyone who wants a copy. Hope this helps – Sylvie

My favorite episode is MESSY MARIA, but I haven’t seen them all. I also LOVE that you remove closet doors that slide so the owner of the stuff inside can see everything. I am planning to do the same with the closet in my bedroom because I am convinced I can purge and organize my clothes better with a full picture.

Another good episode is the one with the clutter room that you turned into a beautiful yellow office for the woman of the house – she has her own “cave” in the basement.

Getting rid of those CDs is not something I would do. I don’t have 3,000 CDs but I do have a lot of books and, YES, I do refer to and/or reread them from time to time.
I have a lot of vinyl that I still play because the sound is better than CDs and downloads from the Cloud. As a matter of fact, I am shopping for a record changer for my 45s and a turntable for my albums.

My co-workers watch Neat as well. Perhaps you will go back and revisit some of your projects so we can know how well the people were able to keep your solutions going and how their lives have changed.

I have not seen all of the episodes and they are not running them in order here so

    Hi Hellen,

Wish I could get your show here in Ontario! Is it available on Bell satellite, do you know?

For the recipes, I do something similar to what Sylvie suggests, but I use one of those self-sticking “magnetic” photo albums. No gluing or stapling required! I do photocopy the second side, or print it out from my computer on one page, so I don’t have to fuss with taking the recipe in and out of the plastic page once it’s in. As Sylvie says, the plastic protects the recipe, and it’s easy to pop a page out of the three-ring binder and prop it up on the counter as a reference.

Thanks for all you do to help those of us who are clutter-challenged!

Hellen, congrats. It’s great that this show has a life of its own and continues to introduce a whole new generation of folks your great ideas and savvy solutions! No wonder it was a recipient in the Los Angeles Organizing Awards!

    My best to you,

    John aka OrganizingLA

Hey John, thanks sweety. Hope it brings more business your way. Miss you and miss the LA vibe!

    Hellen,
I’ve only recently discovered your show — LOVE IT. I can’t get enough — always learning something new about the psychology behind successful organizing, and picking up tips that are especially helpful to me and my family. The thing that strikes me the most, however, is the kindness you show your clients. I have yet to see a judgmental reaction or hear a judgmental word. Your sensitivity and compassion build trust that you only have one’s best interests in mind. But you’re still firm, which pushes us through the door to clutter-free living… I noticed the dates of your show, and was SO HAPPY to find your website, and see you’re still helping people. I can’t wait to get my first monthly newsletter. Thanks again – you’re such a blessing!

    • Hellen Buttigieg on June 17, 2013 at 1:27 pm

Sue, that is one of the nicest things anyone has ever said to me. Thank you so much for your kind words. I am blessed to have found an opportunity to do what I love and make a living from it. Hope you continue to watch the show and that you enjoy the newsletter.

  6. Damiana on June 20, 2013 at 4:19 pm

Does anyone know if the show is available on DVD? The shows are very inspirational and I have released a great number of things but sometimes I get stuck and need a verbal/visual push from an episode.

  7. D L ROBINS on July 13, 2013 at 9:13 pm

I have learned some things from your show. I have a way in which I keep

my clutter down some. I take pictures of things I love. My coffee cup

collections gets to big. I take pictures of them (I even made a screen saver) before I

give them away. I keep the memories and they aren`t packed away. and having

stuffed animals or coffee cups soft and pepper sets on screen keep the people
that gave them to me always on my mind.

  8. D L ROBINS on July 13, 2013 at 9:26 pm

I take photos of my collections; stuff animals, coffee cups, salt and pepper set. ect.

I have made some into (16) screen savers. it lets me keep the memories of the

of the giver the event or the time in my life.

usually I take a few group pictures, then each cup or salt-pepper set. kids -grand kids art work.

it is nice to bee able to take a break with memories–no clutter and I will always

have space or a few cd-dvd` I works for me.

  9. Jessiejack on August 21, 2013 at 1:04 pm

I am enjoying all the reruns. I still learn from each episode. I like how you help the person see the reasons behind the cluttering so she can make a real change. I wish you could go back and do a followup show to see how people are doing and what challenges they have now.
Love those shots of the shoes as you go on your visit!

  10. Paula on September 1, 2013 at 9:46 am

Just started watching your show a few weeks ago on Ion Life… Absolutely love it! It’s so much easier for “stuff” to come in the house (i.e. unending junk mail, numerous exploring treasures from my 5-year old, etc.) than it is to find the time to sort and toss! 😛 So organization is something I’m really making an effort to stay on top of. I am wondering if there is a particular label maker you would recommend for home labeling jobs? Something that holds up for years with a fair price tag without too many fancy “unused” features. Thanks!! 🙂

    • Hellen Buttigieg on September 4, 2013 at 12:25 pm

Paula, great to hear that the show is inspiring you to get organized! I agree – it’s so important to label things, so you can find what you need quickly and easily. I’m a big fan of the Brother P-Touch label makers. My suggestion is to go to your neighborhood Staples store (or anywhere else they’re sold) and have a look at the different models to find the one that best fits your needs. I’m constantly reaching for my label maker, so it’s a great investment – something you’ll use over and over again to keep organized.

      • Bev Kennedy on January 13, 2014 at 6:07 pm

There are so many models of label makers that Brother makes. Do you have a favorite? .

        • Hellen Buttigieg on January 13, 2014 at 9:19 pm

It depends on what you are looking for. Personally, I like the P-Touch D200. Have a look at it online to determine if it meets your requirements. Hope that helps.

  11. Laureen Harris on October 12, 2013 at 10:19 pm

I have been watching your show almost every day and the reruns over and over.
I have been wondering when the new season will start!! I just found out on the web that your show was canceled. I feel pretty bummed out about that. I wonder can you revive the show and start doing new episodes?
I have been telling all my friends about the show, and they sound really interrested.
I am sure you would have lots of people watching, because its a problem that most people have. You give so much encouraging advise and hope for people that are stuck
    In clutter .
Sign me up for the monthly newsletter.

  12. Laureen Harris on October 12, 2013 at 10:21 pm

    Pls revive the show!!
I was pretty unhappy to find it has been canceled

I live in CT. is there a way I can watch episodes of NEAT? I miss the show so much. You motivate people, including me, without berating unfortunate habits.

    • Hellen Buttigieg on November 21, 2013 at 1:55 pm

Hi Sherry, I’m not sure if the show is airing in your area. It’s best to check your local listings and see whether you have ION Life in your area.

  14. Karen Mekeel-Harris on December 3, 2013 at 11:10 am

    Hi Hellen,

Neat is shown twice a day in VA. I enjoy watching your show. I hope you continue a related series in the future. Even though my place isn’t as cluttered as the ones in your show, there is always room for improvement in some areas in my house. You have given me some ideas in the storage area of my closet. Thanks!
Since I do not have a clutter crew like you do, I work on it a little each weekend.

    Karen

  18. Lily on April 2, 2014 at 11:45 am

Hi! My parents and I learned a lot of things from your show, and we’re going to use it in our new house to organize a lot of things. I was just wondering from “Messy Maria”, do you remember her bedroom color? It’s just so pretty and I wanted to use it for my room. But I couldn’t find the color that matches it… It would be a great help if you could tell me the name of the color. Thank you!

    • Hellen Buttigieg on April 2, 2014 at 12:37 pm

Hi Lily, I’m happy to hear that the show has been beneficial for you and your parents. Unfortunately, I don’t have that information for you.

  19. Elaine on April 10, 2014 at 2:27 pm

    Hello Ellen,

Your program is simply EXCELLENT! You are a TERRIFIC! host. I have learned so much about organizing each time I watch your show, it is really one of the best shows I’ve ever seen and I hope you will get so much more exposure because you are great! The people and their organizing challenges are so diverse. I would rather watch a program where the host does not belittle the people but simply points out that they can do better in organizing their homes.

  20. Elaine on April 10, 2014 at 2:32 pm

    Dear HELLEN,

Please excuse the spelling, I meant to say HELLEN. I hope they will correct this terrible error because you are just too terrific! For me to have made this mistake. Please accept my apology for not spelling your name correctly.

  21. Adrienne B. on May 10, 2014 at 9:58 pm

My favorite episodes are The Wedding Planner and Dirty Little Secret. I have been watching Neat for years and love all of Hellen’s advice and tips. Her books are great and her website is marvelous!

  22. Diane on June 3, 2014 at 11:00 am

I want to add a sincere, from my deepest heart, thank you to this list.

Your show has inspired me for over a decade, and given me the tools to put my life in order and also help my family and friends too. After taking care of my own living area and making it serene, I’ve been able to turn outwards and help my overwhelmed and busy brother and his family, with so much mess they couldn’t see the living room floor, and a bedroom their son couldn’t use for months after they had moved into a new place. When they left for a vacation, because who wouldn’t want to “get away from it all” considering where they lived, I worked for days and sorted everything out for them, and cleared out his little bedroom as a surprise for them.

They still need help, but now they can see what they thought was impossible is possible thanks to the skills you taught me. Deepest thank you, your lessons have helped me help not just myself, but those around me. I would enthusiastically buy your DVD’s, but I think I would most like to binge rewatch them all online on Netflix. Perhaps it’s time I search out some place to request that. 🙂

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

    Diane

  23. Joy Anne on June 12, 2014 at 10:23 pm

Just started watching episodes of Neat in US. Inspired me to hire professional organizer who is a member of NAPO to help me turn my clutter “den” into a combination media room/guest bedroom/library. It truly was your kind and professional attitude that made me realize I could release, re – frame and recharge by tossing things that I held on to for emotional security. My parents are gone and I’m now giving away their things respectfully and letting my grief heal without relying on being surrounded by their treasures.

    • Hellen Buttigieg on June 13, 2014 at 9:05 am

Joy, I couldn’t be happier for you! You have taken a big, courageous step forward. It’s stories like yours that make it all worthwhile for me. Thanks so much for sharing how the show inspired you to take action and make positive changes in your life.

  24. Sarah on September 29, 2014 at 4:32 pm

    Hi Hellen,

My husband and I enjoy watching neat on Ion Life in the United States, but we were saddened that it is no longer in the listings. Do you happen to know if Ion will still be airing the show in the future?

I’ve been a long-time fan of yours. You have been a huge positive influence in my life for many years. Thank you for alk that you do!

    • Hellen Buttigieg on September 30, 2014 at 2:52 pm

Hi Sarah, Thanks for being a fan and for watching the show. It’s best to check your local listings because the show airs in different cities around the world and I have no way of knowing when or which channel. I’m happy to hear it has made a positive difference in your life 🙂

      • Sarah on September 30, 2014 at 4:30 pm

        Hi Hellen,

I figured out the problem. Here in the States, Ion W was showing neat as well, but must have stopped showing it this week. Unfortunately, Ion Life isn’t available through our satelite provider. Glad I saved some episodes on my DVR! Just thought I’d share the info in case anyone else on your page was also looking for the show in the listings.

And, excuse my typo in the first post. Thank you for ALL that you, not alk! 🙂

  25. JD on October 4, 2014 at 1:50 am

    Hi,

If you have any information on your show that can make it possible to watch, please let us know. I just found your show, and I love it. Unfortunately, I watched about 10 episodes, and now it’s not airing anymore. I’m happy to buy it, whether online or on DVD if it becomes available.

    Thank you,

    • Hellen Buttigieg on October 4, 2014 at 8:35 am

The show is no longer in production. Perhaps you can contact the network to inquire about encore airings (repeats). As far as I know, DVDs are not available for purchase.

  26. Marmy on October 21, 2014 at 1:08 am

Hellen, I am sorry to hear your show is no longer being produced. I’m interested in some products featured in your shows. Is there a website where I can find this info? Thanks. (You are an inspiration.)
